Lessons from the Farm/ Finding God's Protection in Everyday Moments

Farm life often brings to mind how deeply God cares for us. Today, as I watched a hen with her chicks, I was reminded of some verses.

I observed this mama hen staying close to her little ones, always alert to any potential threat. When danger loomed, she quickly gathered her chicks beneath her wings. From the outside, you wouldn’t even know they were there, hidden under her protective care. It was such a powerful reminder of how God is so willing to shield and care for us.

Psalm 17:8 “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.”

Psalm 57:1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.”

But, unless the chicks were willing to stay close under their mama, they wouldn’t find that safety. They had to trust her protection and stay where she led them, or else the danger would be too great. It’s a beautiful reminder that God offers us His shelter and care, but we also have to choose to stay close to Him, trusting in His guidance and protection.

Ruth 2:12 reflects on how Ruth TOOK refuge under God’s wings

The chicks instinctively go to their mama, knowing the protection and shelter she offers.

But we, on the other hand, are often so stubborn. So many times, we look at God’s protection and snub it, thinking we know better how to handle things or protect ourselves. Sometimes, we don’t even perceive the danger and wander too far off. Or we don’t think He can handle it, and we have to help Him. As if…

And that grieves our God. He sees what’s ahead, He knows the dangers we can’t even imagine, and He knows exactly how to protect us. Yet, sometimes we are unwilling to take refuge in Him, choosing our own way instead. And in those moments of stubbornness, we suffer the consequences, even though His shelter was always there, waiting for us to seek it.

Can you hear the pain in this verse?

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing!” Luke 13:34

Let’s be honest, the mama hen would give her life to protect her chicks, but even then, she might not succeed. God, on the other hand, did give His life to protect us from our enemy, Satan. But unlike the hen, He cannot fail—He’s already won the battle, and He’s proven time and again that He’s more than capable of handling anything we face. Let’s choose to run into the shelter He offers, trusting in His unfailing protection.

I love how farm life has a way of teaching us the deeper truths of God’s love and care. From the simple rhythms of nature to the protective instincts of a mother hen, every moment on the farm reminds me of His faithfulness, His provision, and His relentless desire to keep us safe. The more I observe, the more I see God’s heart reflected in the world around us, and it humbles me to realize that His care for us is even greater than what we can imagine
